Current expansion 01/2025
Expansion reports from BREKO member companies from the period December 18, 2024 – January 24, 2025, in chronological order, without any claim to completeness:
Avacon Connect successfully completes fiber optic expansion in Gehrden
“The wait was more than worth it. With the end of construction of the fiber optic network, we are not only celebrating the establishment of a modern infrastructure, but are also taking a big step towards a digital future for our community. I am delighted that Gehrden can now benefit from ultra-fast Internet,” summarizes Mayor Malte Losert.
High-speed Internet for Huckingen: DCC collects interested parties
The expansion of high-speed Internet is a decisive location factor for modern living and economic progress in the future. Together with the City of Duisburg, Duisburg CityCom (DCC) is consistently driving forward the expansion of the fiber optic network and has already achieved great success in recent years. Today, DCC can already provide around ten percent of Duisburg households with the fastest Internet. DCC is planning the comprehensive expansion of the fiber optic network in the Huckingen district by 2025. The help of local residents is absolutely essential for this. The DCC will therefore start collecting interested parties in January. As soon as at least 30 percent of households in an area express their interest in a connection, the expansion in an area will begin.
New fiber optic network from Unsere Grüne Glasfaser in Bavaria: Bad Füssing is connected
The Lower Bavarian spa town of Bad Füssing is fit for the digital future. On December 17, the municipality’s new fiber optic network was ceremoniously switched “live” by Unsere Grüne Glasfaser (UGG) by Stefan Meyer (Member of the Bavarian Parliament, CSU), Christian Lindinger (Member of the Bavarian Parliament, Freie Wähler), Mayor Tobias Kurz and Hans Koller (Deputy District Administrator) as well as Ralf Stratmann (Expansion Manager at UGG) and Ralph Wehberg (Head of Deployment at UGG). In the coming years, UGG will provide a total of 2.2 million households in rural regions and small and medium-sized towns with high-performance broadband connections.
R-KOM brings high-speed fiber optics to the Candis district: Completion on time for the new year
Construction is underway in the Candis district. Where new buildings are being constructed, the right digital connection is also needed. R-KOM is taking over the fiber optic connection of the new buildings. Shortly before Christmas, the residents at Georg-Aichinger-Strasse 14 and 16 received news of the completion of the FTTH fiber optic house connections. A total of 70 residential units and 10 commercial units were given access to state-of-the-art Internet technology in time for their move-in on January 1, 2025. The expansion was carried out by the construction company Schmack.
Subsidized fibre optic expansion in full swing
Thanks to the federal funding program Gigabit 2.0, over 1,000 addresses in Ahaus, Stadtlohn, Vreden and Südlohn currently have the chance of a free fibre optic connection. The project is supported with funds from the federal government, the state and the four municipalities and is intended to close gaps on the way to nationwide high-speed Internet coverage. LokalWerke Westmünsterland is carrying out the technical expansion and is therefore responsible for the implementation of the project, from planning and construction measures through to laying the fiber optic infrastructure. As the local contractual partner, we also offer corresponding contracts for the supply of high-speed Internet, telephony and television. The project sponsor is aconium GmbH.
Hamburg housing cooperatives rely on fiber optics with Tele Columbus
Berlin, January 13, 2025: The three major Hamburg housing cooperatives Altonaer Spar- und Bauverein eG, Baugenossenschaft Bergedorf-Bille eG and Bauverein der Elbgemeinden eG are working together with Tele Columbus to drive forward the expansion of fiber optics in the Hanseatic city. From 2025, around 31,000 cooperative apartments throughout the city will be equipped with modern fiber optic connections.
Expansion of the gigabit-capable fiber optic network is progressing: ruhrfibre becomes active in the south of Bottrop
In addition to the fiber optic expansion at Bottrop schools and in commercial areas, which has been launched and is funded by the federal government and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the city of Bottrop’s economic development department is also responsible for the fiber optic supply for the wider city area. The responsible department is endeavoring to coordinate the expansion plans of the various telecommunications companies as seamlessly as possible in all parts of the city without laying multiple lines from different providers, the so-called superstructure. This is because, in principle, every telecommunications company is entitled to lay its lines in the urban area independently of others.
High-speed Internet for Rahm: DCC gathers interested parties
The expansion of high-speed Internet is a decisive location factor for modern living and economic progress in the future. Together with the City of Duisburg, Duisburg CityCom (DCC) is consistently driving forward the expansion of the fiber optic network and has already achieved great success in recent years. Today, DCC can already provide around ten percent of Duisburg households with the fastest Internet. DCC is planning the comprehensive expansion of the fiber optic network in the Rahm district by 2025. The help of local residents is absolutely essential for this. The DCC will therefore start collecting interested parties in January. As soon as at least 30 percent of households in an area express their interest in a connection, the expansion in an area will begin.
Neusalza-Spremberg is fully supplied with high-speed Internet
High-speed internet is now available everywhere in Neusalza-Spremberg. All subsidized broadband addresses in the municipality have been connected with fibre optics since December 2024. SachsenEnergie and its subsidiary SachsenGigaBit began expanding the telecommunications network in May 2022. In total, the municipal utility has laid around 87 kilometers of fiber optic cable for 250 residential and commercial properties and enabled surfing at speeds of up to one gigabit per second. The Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure and the Free State of Saxony are funding the broadband expansion of previously underserved address points with data rates of less than 30 Mbit/s as part of the so-called “economic viability gap”. Private companies are responsible for the construction and operation of the infrastructure and provide corresponding services.

Around 21,000 of the planned 46,000 fiber optic connections have already been built. This success is based on close cooperation with the district, the Zweckverband Breitbandausbau Landkreis Böblingen and Gigabit Region Stuttgart GmbH.
