BREKO press release: Municipal utilities & energy suppliers accelerate fiber optic expansion in Germany

New fiber optic business field represents a great opportunity for the future – Fiber optic forum by BREKO, con|energy and MICUS at E-world 2020 shows success factors for fiber optic entry
Essen, 12.02.2020
The “Role of energy supply companies (EVU) and municipal utilities in fiber optic expansion” was the focus of this year’s fiber optic forum at the leading trade fair for the energy industry, E-world 2020. The Federal Association for Broadband Communication (BREKO) as the leading German fiber optic association, con|energy as a partner of the energy industry and the strategy consultancy MICUS as a fiber optic network planner had jointly invited to the innovative information and networking format. The event was supported by BREKO member company WINGAS.
More than 200 trade visitors, particularly from the energy supply and municipal utilities sector, learned from top speakers from trade associations and municipal utilities with broadband experience about the right approach and opportunities when entering the new business field of fiber optic expansion.
Background: More and more energy supply companies and municipal utilities are adding fiber optic expansion in their region to their existing “classic” portfolio of services such as electricity, gas or water supply. In order to support the providers in this and thus drive forward the urgently needed expansion with future-proof fiber optics in Germany even faster, the fiber optic forum is all about this issue. As part of this year’s E-world, the Fibre Optic Forum once again offered municipal utilities and regional network operators an important platform to discuss the opportunities and challenges of fibre optic expansion.
MICUS Managing Director Dr. Martin Fornefeld shares this view. In his keynote speech, the fiber optic expert emphasized: “Municipal utilities as fiber optic providers are becoming increasingly important for Germany.” This is why the fiber optic forum was jointly created to show “optimal ways into this highly interesting market”.
Bernhard Palm, Chairman of the Management Board of the EnBW subsidiary NetCom BW and BREKO Vice President, fully agrees with Fornefeld: “Fiber optic expansion – whether self-economically or with the help of subsidies in areas that are otherwise not economically accessible – represents a great opportunity for the future for energy suppliers and municipal utilities. This is because fiber-optic expansion is taking place directly on site and in close cooperation with cities and municipalities.”
BREKO Managing Director Dr. Stephan Albers emphasized that BREKO network operators – and municipal utilities in particular – are playing a key role in driving forward real fiber-optic expansion in Germany. “Fiber optic expansion right into buildings is a regional project business. Many BREKO network operators are already implementing nationwide coverage with future-proof fiber optic connections based on innovative and individual solutions. Municipal utilities in particular are ideal cooperation partners for cities and municipalities when it comes to fiber optic expansion – because they are experts in network expansion, network operation and the marketing of telecommunications services.”
Stefanie Hamm, Managing Director of E-world energy & water GmbH, was also very satisfied with the event: “The topic of fiber optic expansion is highly interesting for E-world and our audience. We are delighted that the event was once again such a great success with more than 200 visitors.”
