Press release by the associations BREKO, ANGA, Bitkom, BUGLAS and VATM: Securing telecommunications network operations in the corona crisis

The extremely difficult situation caused by the coronavirus crisis poses major challenges for citizens, companies and politicians. High-performance telecommunications networks are an important prerequisite for people to be able to communicate with each other, work on the move and obtain information. The telecommunications network operators organized in the associations ANGA, Bitkom, BREKO, BUGLAS and VATM are working hard to ensure the performance of their networks and services under the given circumstances. Access to telecommunications systems is of great importance in this context.
In view of increasing restrictions on freedom of movement as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the undersigned associations are therefore calling on the federal and state governments to ensure that service technicians have access to voice and data communication systems as well as television and radio transmission systems. It goes without saying that the necessary and required protective measures in terms of the health protection of customers and all other persons, but also themselves, will be observed.
“The maintenance of healthcare and administration, the activities of security authorities, the prevention of supply bottlenecks, the economic activities of industry and many companies, as well as mobile working and private communication, all depend on the proper functioning of telecommunications networks. Our companies and their service providers need a simple and uniform nationwide special permit that allows them to ensure network operation even in the event of even more far-reaching restrictions,” emphasize the presidents of the associations Thomas Braun (ANGA), Achim Berg (Bitkom), Norbert Westfal (BREKO), Theo Weirich (BUGLAS) and Martin Witt (VATM).
The associations have today submitted a corresponding proposal to those responsible at federal and state level. The presidents of the signatory associations commented: “We assume that the crisis management team, federal states and local authorities will create the necessary basis for corresponding exemption rights in the near future.”
