BREKO press release on the new KfW funding programs for fiber optic expansion
BREKO welcomes the KfW funding programs published today by the Federal Ministry of Transport and KfW to accelerate the expansion of fiber optics in Germany, especially in light of the current difficult situation of the corona crisis, which will have an impact on fiber optic expansion in Germany – not least because of the “payment moratorium” for telecommunications services provided for in the “Act to Mitigate the Consequences of the COVID-19 Pandemic”.
However, the more than 200 BREKO network operators are still determined to continue to implement the majority of fiber optic expansion on their own in the future. In this respect, we are pleased that the BMVI, together with the KfW, wants to underline and support the importance of self-business expansion with these two programs.
It is now important that the KfW programs are implemented quickly and unbureaucratically so that companies willing to expand can benefit from them as quickly as possible. The corona crisis is already clearly showing how important a high-performance fiber optic infrastructure is for citizens and companies in Germany. We must continue to work on this at full speed.
About BREKO
As the leading fibre association with more than 540 member companies, the German Broadband Association (BREKO) promotes competition in the German telecommunications market. Its members are clearly committed to future-proof fibre networks and are responsible for more than half of the deployment of fibre connections in Germany. In 2024, they invested 4.9 billion euros for this purpose. Further information can be found at brekoverband.de/en.
