Bonn, October 17, 2022 As the leading fiber optic association, the German Broadband Association (BREKO) awards telecommunications network operators with a seal of quality. The award of the “Real Fiber” quality seal is linked to criteria such as the willingness to invest in fiber optic networks to buildings and homes (FTTB/FTTH). Another prerequisite is that the award-winning company gives priority to the expansion of these genuine fiber optic connections in relation to other technologies.

The German Broadband Association (BREKO) awards a seal of quality to telecommunications companies that act as trustworthy, competent and reliable local fiber optic partners and thus actively implement the BREKO guiding principle “Fiber for Future” for Germany’s competitiveness.

Companies must fulfill criteria

The “real fiber optic” quality seal is linked to criteria such as the amount of investment made and planned in fiber optic networks to buildings and homes. Another prerequisite is that the awarded company gives priority to the expansion of these “real” fiber optic connections in relation to other technologies. Furthermore, the company must offer open access, i.e. make the fiber optic networks it has built available to other competitors on fair terms. The aim is to prevent overbuilding and conserve resources. This also has advantages for consumers: they can get a fiber optic connection more quickly and at the same time there is greater freedom of choice thanks to more competition.

BREKO Managing Director Dr. Stephan Albers: “Where it says fiber optics on the label, there must be fiber optics inside. Only real fibre optics will lead us to full connectivity and, as a future-proof digital infrastructure, open up the full potential of digitalization. Our seal of quality is awarded to companies that are committed to building real fiber optic networks and thus help to ensure that the full fiber optic quality reaches people and companies and that they can participate in digital life – whether in the countryside or in the city.”

Real fiber optics for full connectivity

High-performance fiber optic networks are the basis for the digital life of the present and future. The most important players in the expansion of fiber optics in Germany are the alternative network operators. They implement 70 percent of the expansion with real fiber optic connections and supply both metropolitan areas and rural areas with future-proof digital infrastructure.

The term “real fiber optics” stands for fiber optic lines to buildings (FTTB) and homes (FTTH). The amount of data transmitted via the internet is increasing rapidly. More and more devices in the home are networked with each other. With a fiber optic connection in the building or home, bandwidths in the gigabit range are no problem. And not just for downloads, but also for uploads. There are practically no upper limits to bandwidths. Data transmission via fiber optic networks is also particularly energy-efficient and therefore consumes significantly less electricity than conventional copper or cable networks.
