BREKO award: First network operator from Saarland receives “Real Fiber” seal of approval
Bonn/Saarlouis, 01.08.2024 – The German Broadband Communications Association (BREKO) has awarded Stadtwerke Saarlouis its “Real Fiber” seal of quality. Germany’s leading fiber optic association thus recognizes the consistent expansion of fiber optic connections to buildings and homes.
Stadtwerke Saarlouis began the expansion of a nationwide fiber optic network for Saarlouis back in 2009. Right from the start, the focus was on real fiber optic connections to buildings (FTTB) and homes (FTTH). The basis for this is the “FTTH master plan”, according to which every time house connections are renovated or renewed, or construction work is carried out in a street, microducts for fiber optics are also laid.
Stadtwerke Saarlouis could currently supply 3,400 customers with FTTB and FTTH. With the expansion of the Picard district, a further 983 customers will have the opportunity to book a real fiber optic connection next year.
Thanks to its commitment, Stadtwerke Saarlouis is the first telecommunications company from Saarland to be awarded the “Real Fiber” seal by BREKO as part of its “Fiber for Future” initiative. An important criterion for the award is that network operators give priority to real fiber optic connections, i.e. FTTB and FTTH, in relation to other technologies. Stadtwerke Saarlouis has clearly met this requirement.
Sven Knapp, Head of BREKO Capital Office: “Real fiber optics means future security and digital participation. This is exactly what Stadtwerke Saarlouis stands for, as it has set itself the goal of providing citizens and companies in Saarlouis with fiber optic coverage across the board. In doing so, they are also creating the basis for making Saarlouis a smart city.”
Ralf Levacher, Technical Managing Director of Stadtwerke Saarlouis: “With this modern connection technology (FTTH), all the advantages come into play: high data transfer rates, a stable Internet connection and low energy consumption. FTTH fiber optic internet is an important building block for strengthening the future viability, attractiveness and competitiveness of Saarlouis.”
