BREKO welcomes Tomaso Duso as the new Chairman of the Monopolies Commission

Bonn, 25.09.2024 – The German Broadband Association (BREKO) is pleased about today’s election of Prof. Dr. Tomaso Duso as the new Chairman of the Monopolies Commission.

Sven Knapp, Head of the BREKO Capital Office: “We warmly congratulate Tomaso Duso on his election and look forward to continuing the very good and trusting cooperation with the Monopolies Commission under his leadership. As an independent body, the Monopolies Commission plays an important role in ensuring fair competitive conditions in the telecommunications market. With Tomaso Duso at the helm, the Commission will continue to provide constructive and important impetus for fair competition that will advance digitalization in Germany.”

The regulation of copper-fiber optic migration will be a decisive factor in setting the course for the next few years of competition in the telecommunications industry. As Deutsche Telekom’s competitors are responsible for over 60 percent of fiber optic expansion, the market needs a competitive concept for this quickly. The strong voice of the Monopolies Commission is more important than ever to prevent Deutsche Telekom from strategically using the DSL switch-off to transfer its market power from the copper to the fiber optic network.

The Monopolies Commission’s expertise will also be in demand at European level in the coming months in order to counteract visions of European “super champions” and to ensure that the planned Digital Networks Act strengthens competition in the telecommunications sector instead of pushing it back.

“We wish Tomaso Duso every success in his new position and look forward to continuing the dialog and cooperation with the Monopolies Commission under his leadership,” continued Knapp.
