BREKO Market Analysis 2024: Mecklenburg-Vorpommern clearly above the national average in fiber optic expansion

According to the latest market analysis by the German Broadband Association (BREKO), Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has made strong progress in expanding its digital infrastructure. On the occasion of the 8th Broadband Forum Mecklenburg-Vorpommern tomorrow (Thursday), BREKO presents the figures and explains the background.

With a fiber optic expansion rate of 54% as of mid-2024, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is among the top states in the country – and well above the national average of 43%. The fiber optic roll-out rate describes the proportion of households, companies and public institutions that have a fiber optic line at least in the street nearby. With an increase of 8 percentage points compared to the same period last year, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern recorded strong growth.

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is also at the top in terms of the proportion of households actually connected – the fiber optic connection rate – at 31% (national average: 23%). These are the results of the BREKO Market Analysis 2024, which is based on data from all relevant companies involved in fiber optic expansion in Germany. It is therefore representative of the German telecommunications market.

Oliver Ulke, Deputy Head of State Policy at BREKO: “The development of fiber optic expansion in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is an absolute success story. Despite having the lowest population density in Germany, more and more people there have access to fast fiber optic Internet. In addition to the commitment of politicians, this is made possible above all by Telekom’s competitors, who are responsible for the majority of fiber optic expansion in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.”

Christian Pegel, Digital Minister of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern: “We are just as pleased with the figures from the market analysis as they are an incentive for us to continue giving fiber optic expansion this high priority in the future. Access to fast, reliable internet is essential for citizens and companies alike.”
