Berlin, 24.02.2025 Dr. Stephan Albers, Managing Director of the German Broadband Association (BREKO), comments on the results of the Bundestag elections:

“We congratulate Friedrich Merz and the CDU/CSU on their election victory. Based on the election results, it is now important to form a strong democratic government as quickly as possible. In order to form a government as quickly as possible, the coalition negotiations should focus on the most urgent measures in the respective areas.

The new German government must actively support the expansion of the digital infrastructure as the basis for digitization with high priority and with a competition-oriented and investment-friendly telecommunications policy. The most important measures that must be implemented quickly include the design of a competition- and consumer-friendly switch from copper to fiber optic networks, a consistent reduction in bureaucracy that noticeably relieves companies and an expansion acceleration law that effectively accelerates the expansion of fiber optics. It is also high time for the complete sale of the federal government’s shares in Telekom. Legislators and regulators on the one hand and shareholders on the other do not fit together and lead to conflicts of interest that prevent the rapid expansion of fiber optics. In addition, we need an independent digital ministry that is also capable of acting quickly, in which overarching digitalization issues such as digital infrastructure, administrative digitalization, national and international digital policy and data policy are united under one roof and dealt with efficiently.”
