Standstill instead of progress – the federal government must finally implement the most important topics of the gigabit strategy
Berlin, 14.10.2024 – Today, the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) presented a progress report on the implementation of the federal government’s gigabit strategy. Sven Knapp, Head of the Capital City Office at the German Broadband Association (BREKO), explains:
“The political goal of a nationwide fiber optic rollout by 2030 is no longer achievable. The BREKO Market Analysis 2024 clearly shows that the expansion has already slowed down.
Digital Minister Wissing has so far made no progress on the most important issues of the gigabit strategy for the further expansion of fiber optics:
The BMDV has still not presented a timetable for the creation of a competition-compliant concept for copper-fiber optic migration. We expect a concrete proposal on this by the end of the year.
The BMDV is playing for time when it comes to the strategic dual fiber optic expansion and is thus protecting Telekom’s interests. This allows the former monopolist to continue its strategically destructive dual fiber-optic expansion and further slow down the nationwide fiber-optic expansion for the whole of Germany. Effective measures must be taken immediately to counter this. Proposals for this have been on the table for many months.
In order to counteract the slowdown in fiber optic expansion that has already begun, we now need clear signals from politicians. The planned Telecommunications Network Expansion Acceleration Act (TK NABEG) is far too unambitious in its current form and must be improved in key areas.”
