Lower Saxony Fiber Optic Day: Strong smart cities need a strong digital infrastructure

The Lower Saxony Fiber Optic Day is taking place today, Friday, in Wolfsburg. In the presence of Lower Saxony’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Olaf Lies, projects relating to digital applications and fiber optic infrastructure will be presented. Jan Simons, Head of State Policy at the German Broadband Association (BREKO), comments:

“The Lower Saxony Fiber Optic Day has established itself as a strong format. This is good news for the expansion of digital infrastructure in the state. According to the BREKO Market Study 2023, the fiber optic rate in Lower Saxony is 38% – a midfield position in a nationwide comparison.

This makes it all the more important that the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Transport, Building and Digitalization has created an opportunity to bring together all the key players in fibre optic expansion with the Lower Saxony Fibre Optic Day. Only together can politics and business achieve the goal of nationwide fiber optic expansion by 2030. The fact that Digital Minister Olaf Lies is taking part in the event today underlines once again that the topic of fiber optics is clearly a top priority in Lower Saxony!

In Wolfsburg, the Ministry has chosen a suitable host for the Fiber Optics Day. The city was recently named Germany’s first ‘real fiber-optic municipality’ by BREKO for its comprehensive fiber-optic expansion. Nowhere is it more evident than in Wolfsburg that a high-performance fiber optic infrastructure is needed to make a smart city possible and to supply the necessary applications with high data rates. Whether it’s the Wolfsburg fire department’s 5G real-world laboratory or the local internet node SON-IX from telecommunications provider WOBCOM: strong smart cities need a strong digital infrastructure.”
