BREKO press statement on the Federal Network Agency’s Telecommunications 2023 annual report

Berlin, 16.05.2024 – Sven Knapp, Head of the Capital Office at the German Broadband Association (BREKO), comments on the Telecommunications 2023 Annual Report published today by the Federal Network Agency:

“The figures from the Federal Network Agency confirm the trend that was already apparent in the BREKO Market Analysis 2023: fiber optic expansion is in full swing. The year-on-year increase in the number of available fiber optic connections shows that investments are continuing at a high level. The slight decline in investment in the telecommunications market as a whole probably mainly affects the copper-based bridging technologies DSL and TV cable, whose downward trend that began in 2022 has stabilized in 2023.

However, in order to continue these positive developments, better framework conditions are needed, in particular an end to the strategically destructive dual fiber optic expansion, and better education so that more citizens actually use the available fiber optic connections.”
