Sustainability

Since 2022, sustainability has increasingly become a focal point of our association’s work. It is an integral part of responsible digitalization and is becoming a strategic area of business development for companies in the telecommunications sector. In response to the growing relevance of this topic for the industry, a dedicated project group was established in early 2023, where we politically accompany the development of regulations and support our member companies at various stages of development in reporting and business development with best practices.

FAQ

This question can be answered with a clear “Yes” – the operation is even significantly more energy-efficient, and the faster the fiber optic migration takes place, the greater the effect. Fiber optic networks have the highest energy efficiency, the lowest CO2 consumption, and provide the greatest protection against disruptions compared to all other internet access technologies. Furthermore, they are significantly more powerful than any other technology. More details can be found in the report from the Technical University of Central Hesse below, as well as in the following two WIK studies: Ecological effects of fiber optic expansion: WIK – Wissenschaftliches Institut für Infrastruktur und Kommunikationsdienste GmbH & SustainabilityModern fixed and mobile networks compared across different regional structures

Even those not affected by CSRD reporting requirements are likely to be confronted with sustainability reporting demands in the future, for example, from investors, in tenders, or as part of supply chain disclosures. It therefore makes sense to proactively prepare for this development on a voluntary basis and get the company ready

The inclusion of fiber optic expansion in the EU taxonomy would make it easier for network operators to access green financing and increase their attractiveness to ESG investors. Additionally, opportunities related to regulatory advantages such as funding or simplified approvals may arise. In the long term, this strengthens the competitiveness of fiber expansion companies and supports sustainable digitalization. BREKO is advocating for a timely, streamlined, and bureaucratically simple addition to the taxonomy regime.
