The “Echte Glasfaser” quality seal from Germany’s leading fiber optic association

As the leading fiber optic association, the Federal Association for Broadband Communication (BREKO) awards a quality seal to German network operators who act as trustworthy, competent and reliable fiber optic partners on site in German regions and thus actively implement our guiding principle “Fiber for Future” for the competitiveness of Germany. The “real fiber optic” quality seal is linked to criteria such as the level of investment made and planned in fiber optic access networks to buildings and homes. Another prerequisite is that the award-winning company gives priority to the expansion of these genuine fiber optic connections over other technologies.

The term “real fiber optics” refers to fiber optic lines to the buildings(FTTB) and homes(FTTH). With FTTH = Fiber to the Home, the line consists entirely of fiber optic cable. Since only fiber optics can transmit the high bandwidths, only a complete fiber optic line is a “real” fiber optic line.

With the abbreviation FTTC (Fiber to the curb), the fiber optic lines only go to the building or even only to the junction box in the street, not to each individual user. Part of the line still consists of old copper or TV cables. Each line is only as fast as its slowest component, so the advantages of fiber optics cannot be fully exploited.

In its gigabit strategy, the German government has set itself ambitious targets for the nationwide expansion of future-proof digital infrastructure. With a current fiber optic coverage of 26% (as of 30 June 2022), a first milestone has been reached. In the context of the current geopolitical and economic situation, an improvement in expansion conditions is more important than ever for achieving the German government’s goal of supplying half of German households and companies with fiber optics by the end of 2025.

Who are the partners in fiber optic expansion? The alternative network operators are responsible for over 70% of the expansion with real fiber optic connections in Germany. They supply both conurbations and rural areas with future-proof fiber optic connections.
