The federal government decided today to reduce the funds for gigabit funding in 2024 from the originally planned three billion euros to two billion euros and to one billion euros in 2025. Sven Knapp, Head of the Capital Office of the German Broadband Communications Association (BREKO), explains: "Reducing the funds for gigabit funding is understandable given the tight budget situation. The good news is that this is not at the expense of fiber optic expansion, on the contrary."
The Federal Cabinet today passed the Telecommunications Network Expansion Acceleration Act (TK-NABEG). Dr. Stephan Albers, Managing Director of the German Broadband Association (BREKO), explains: "More than half a year late, the traffic light coalition actually wanted to pass a law today to speed up the expansion of fiber optics and mobile communications. It has failed miserably in this respect."
The Federal Cabinet today passed the law to implement the NIS2 Directive and to strengthen cyber security. Stephan Albers, Managing Director of the German Broadband Association (BREKO), explains: "Telecommunications networks are the digital lifelines for the economy and society. A number of industries and companies as well as critical infrastructures such as hospitals and public administration depend on the smooth functioning of data networks. Protecting them is therefore a top priority!"
The Federal Network Agency today decided on the level of fees for the use of Telekom's construction facilities. Sven Knapp, Head of the Capital Office at the German Broadband Association (BREKO), explains: "The fees set by the Federal Network Agency are not a market price, but exclusively a decision against the market-dominant company."
The German Broadband Association (BREKO) today awarded Borken the title of "Real Fiber Optic Municipality". Germany's leading fiber optic association thus honors the city from the Münsterland region for its comprehensive fiber optic expansion.
With the 2025 federal budget, the Federal Cabinet today approved almost three billion euros for the promotion of fiber optic expansion in Germany. The German Broadband Communications Association (BREKO) has awarded the network operator KomMITT its "Real Fiber" quality seal. To date, the subsidiary of Stadtwerke Ratingen has expanded 93% of Ratingen's urban area with future-proof fiber optics to buildings and homes.
The Bundestag's Digital Committee today approved the Federal Network Agency's proposal to increase the minimum requirements for the right to be provided with telecommunications services. Dr. Stephan Albers, Managing Director of the German Broadband Association (BREKO), commented: "We consider the proposed increase in minimum bandwidths to 15 Mbit/s for downloads and 5 Mbit/s for uploads to be questionable."
The German Broadband Association (BREKO) is committed to a free and open-minded society. With a statement adopted by the BREKO Board of Directors, Germany's largest fiber optic association is sending a signal: against hatred and agitation and for the strengthening of the free democratic basic order.
As part of the Fiber for Future initiative, the Bundesverband Breitbandkommunikation e.V. (BREKO) has honored Jonas Merzbacher as a digital politician. In recent months, the mayor of Gundelsheim has campaigned for the nationwide expansion of fiber optics in the municipality in the district of Bamberg.
