BREKO Pressestatement zur Konsultation der Europäischen Kommission für die Überarbeitung der EU-Fusionskontroll-Leitlinien

„Im Kontext der am Donnerstag gestarteten Konsultation der Europäischen Kommission zur Überarbeitung der EU-Fusionskontroll-Leitlinien erkennt der Bundesverband Breitbandkommunikation (BREKO) die Bedeutung der Stärkung der Wettbewerbsfähigkeit und Souveränität Europas in strategisch bedeutsamen Bereichen an, sowohl innerhalb Europas als auch im globalen Wettbewerb.
Allerdings darf dabei die Notwendigkeit der konsequenten Sicherstellung eines fairen Wettbewerbs auf dem Telekommunikationsmarkt nicht aus dem Fokus geraten. Nur eine wirksame Fusionskontrolle kann das Entstehen neuer Monopole verhindern. Monopolistische Strukturen bremsen den Wettbewerb und stellen somit eine Gefahr für Investitionen in den weiteren Glasfaserausbau und das Wohl der Verbrauchinnen und Verbraucher dar.
Mit Blick auf die anstehende Anpassung des Rechtsrahmens der Fusionskontrolle appellieren wir an die Europäische Kommission, Wettbewerb als Ermöglicher und unverzichtbares Element zur Erreichung internationaler Wettbewerbsfähigkeit zu begreifen und die wettbewerblichen Strukturen entsprechend entschlossen zu schützen.“

„In response to the consultation on the revision of the EU Merger Guidelines launched by the European Commission on Thursday, the German Broadband Association (BREKO) recognises how important it is to strengthen Europe’s competitiveness and sovereignty in strategically important areas, both within Europe and on a global scale.
However, consistently safeguarding fair competition in the telecommunications market remains crucial. Only effective merger control can prevent the emergence of new monopolies. Monopolistic structures slow down competition and therefore pose a threat to further investments into the fibre roll-out and may ultimately jeopardise consumer welfare.
With a view to the upcoming revision of the existing regulatory framework for merger control, we appeal to the European Commission to recognise competition as an enabler and indispensable stepping stone on the path to international competitiveness, and to protect competitive market structures accordingly.“
